The importance of chasing your dreams

This is a good time to talk a little about my journey. I was a full-time teacher for several years and always knew I wasn’t fulfilling my dreams. My role as a teacher involved motivating and inspiring young people; urging them to follow their passion and telling them that they could be anything they wanted to be if they just put their minds to it. The problem was, I felt like a hypocrite because I wasn’t following my own passion.

So, a few years ago I quit my full-time job and trained to be an actor. I know. Crazy. What was I thinking quitting a solid profession to enter one with absolutely zero job security and a series of rejections at every turn? The statistics didn’t deter me. I could stay in a secure job, reach retirement age with a good pension and spend my twilight years travelling (or recovering from the stress of the last forty!) I knew it was now or never and I needed to silence that little voice inside saying, “Do you really want to do this for the rest of your life?”

So, as someone who is an advocate of dream chasing, I thought I would offer some tips for those who are afraid of making a change in their lives.

What’s Stopping You?

This is the first question you need to ask yourself. What is stopping you right now from following your dreams? If it’s money, is there a way to save up for that dream you have and possibly work part-time while you pursue it? Write down the ‘obstacles’ that are in your way. Quite often, these are ones we place in our own path.

Four little letters. On their own, innocuous. Combined, they can leave us reaching for the security blanket of life for that much needed feeling of safety.  Often the only thing stopping us is ourselves. We often come up with a million reasons to avoid something, whether it’s that talk with the boss or that leap of faith. But really, what’s the worst that could happen? Fear is one of the things between you and your dreams. What does FEAR stand for? Well, it’s your choice. As the saying goes, it can mean forget everything and run or face everything and rise.

Just Do It

I believe that life has a way of finding you and that there are subtle signs along life’s paths telling us what’s right and what we could change to make our lives better. I’m not condoning recklessness but don’t let the fear monster whisper in your ear too often.

How about you? Have you made a big change in your life and followed your dreams? Do you have any tips for anyone who’s thinking of making a change?  I’d love to hear your story.
